Important Update on NEET UG Counselling in Uttar Pradesh: Here is What You Should Know!

Hey NEET warriors! In case you are pursuing a seat in a good medical college in Uttar Pradesh then strap on your seat belt, the party is now getting out of control. On August 30, 2025, the Uttar Pradesh State Counselling Board issued a bombshell notice that is turning the NEET UG counselling process inside out. With the help of a High Court decision in Sabra Ahmed vs. State of Uttar Pradesh and others, Round 1 of counselling is pressing the reset button. Let us get into the details of what is going on and how it might affect your white coat chance!

Why the Chaos? The High Court’s Big Call

The case revolves around four state government-sponsored medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh: Ambedkar Nagar, Kannauj, Jalaun, and Saharanpur which had been funded under the Special Component Plan (SCP). The SCP was first meant to be used as a tool to fund development in underserved areas; however, it was misconstrued to permit higher reservation quotas. In particular, these colleges were allowed 62 percent quota of Scheduled Caste (SC), 5 seats of Scheduled Tribe (ST) quota (more than the usual 2 percent), 11 percent of Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota, and 7 per cent of unreserved quota, but no Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota.

Based on the Uttar Pradesh Act of 2006 and the case of Indira Sahni Mandal issued by the Supreme Court, the High Court held that these extra reservations were illegal since a maximum of 50% reservations is mandatory. The court further explained that the SCP was simply to fund and not to change reservation policies. As a result, all previous government orders of 2010-2015 are cancelled, and the colleges have to follow the traditional reservation system: 21% SC, 2% ST, 27% OBC, 10% EWS, and the rest of the seats are not restricted by the category.

What is shifting among NEET Candidates?

The punch-line here is that the court has directed a new round of choice filling to kill Round 1 allotments. This is not the issue of those four colleges only; it could stir up all the medical colleges of the government in Uttar Pradesh. Why? Since applicants who received the slots in such colleges must have had other colleges in their list and adjusting the seat arrangement spoils everyone. It even has a possibility of having a ripple effect on the private colleges, as some of the candidates who were happy with their seats in private colleges would now get government seats and fill the new vacancies.

Let’s talk numbers:

  • Unreserved seats: 104 to approximately 108.
  • OBC seats: To win about 52 additional.
  • EWS seats: A new addition of 32-36 seats.
  • SC seats: A massive cut of 176-180 seats.
  • ST seats: Losing about 12 seats.

These changes will stir up cut-offs on a large scale. There could be an increase in cut-offs by as many as 1,000 All India Ranks (approximately one-mark difference in score) by unreserved category folks. With SC candidates, it will be even more difficult, as the number of cut-offs may increase fourfold to 15,000 ranks, which is a massive barrier.
