Union Cabinet Approves Bill to Establish New IIM in Guwahati, 2nd in Northeast, 22nd Nationally

1. Legislative success and regional achievements

The Union Cabinet's clearing the way for the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati is an exciting development for this region. After IIM Shillong came first in 2007, this will be the second IIM in the Northeast region and the 22nd IIM in India. The central government has earmarked over ₹500 crore for this initiative. Situated in a city already recognized as an educational hub, home to IIT Guwahati, NLU & Judicial Academy, and AIIMS (Changsari), and a considerable enough cadre of colleges, the new IIM is poised to support management education, entrepreneurship, and economic development in the region. The creation of an IIM falls well within a number of initiatives set forth by the government to develop higher-education infrastructure in the NE region, to reduce regional disparities in the country, to improve employability, and to integrate the region into the national economy and external economies. This legislation will be introduced in Parliament after the current session.

2. Strengthening Guwahati as an Academic & Innovation Hub

The establishment of this institute in Guwahati further affirms its burgeoning identity as the academic heart of the Northeast. Guwahati already has several prestigious institutions, such as

IIT Guwahati

National Law University & Judicial Academy

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Changsari

The addition of an IIM adds to the ecosystem and creates synergies between the various institutions across sciences, engineering, law, management, and medicine.

This co-location will enable the institutions to leverage each other’s strengths to generate interdisciplinary collaboration, enhancements in research projects, startup communities, and liveliness of campus life and enable Guwahati to emerge as the best education and innovation destination in the region.

3. Addressing Regional Disparities & Promoting Equity in Education

The Cabinet announcement is a component of the central government’s scheme to enhance higher education in the Northeast. Over the last few years, the central

The government has undertaken several projects intended to:

Create new central universities

Add AIIMS campuses

Provide specialized research facilities

All the projects listed above are intended to narrow the gap in development, create access to world-class education for more people in the region, and improve employability standards.

By establishing an IIM in Guwahati, education officials will give local students the opportunity to access a premier management education program without needing to overcome geographical or economic obstacles, while still being able to recruit from the entire country, leading to a brain drain in employment.
