Fee and Stipend for MD/MS in West Bengal

When considering PG medical education, the cost of tuition, availability of stipends, and associated living expenses play a key role in deciding the ROI (Return on Investment) of pursuing an MD/MS degree. West Bengal offers a very favourable financial scenario, particularly in government medical colleges, making it an enticing destination for aspiring doctors. West Bengal has a clear distinction between government and private institutions in terms of fees and stipends.

  • Tuition Fees:

West Bengal Government medical colleges have some of the most affordable tuition fees in India. In contrast, private medical colleges like KPC Medical College & Hospital and IQ City Medical College charge significantly higher tuition fees. Management or NRI quota seats in private colleges are the costliest. Private colleges are a boon for those aspirants who have deep pockets.

  • Stipend:

Monthly stipends in government colleges are quite handsome and can be more than 1 lakh in some colleges. But usually, stipend in government colleges hover around β‚Ή50000. Private colleges also offer stipend. Shri Ramkrishna Institute of Medical Sciences offers about β‚Ή45000 as monthly stipend.

Indemnity Bond

Indemnity Bond for the Postgraduate trainees requires the MD/MS students to serve the Government of West Bengal after successful conclusion of their MD/MS course by working in the multispecialty / superspecialty hospitals / secondary and tertiary level hospitals in the state for a continuous period of 3 years to serve the people, failing which they shall be liable to recompense the West Bengal government a penal amount of Rupees 10 Lakh for each defaulting year. Government of West Bengal shall be at absolute liberty to realize the said penal amount from the defaulting PG doctor in accordance with law. During the bond period, postgraduate doctors will be designated as Senior Resident and it shall be obligatory on their part to observe and perform in accordance with the rules and regulations for the Senior Resident in West Bengal prevailing during the tenure of the aforementioned stated bond period.

Premature Discontinuation Bond

A MD/MS student needs to pay a sum of Rs. 5,00,000/- (Rupees five lakh) to the Government of West Bengal on resigning or discontinuing the course before the end of the tenure of the course.

Admission Process

The admission process for MD/MS programs in West Bengal is very structured, transparent, and largely merit-based, making it absolutely straightforward for aspiring doctors. West Bengal follows the All-India NEET PG counselling system while also relying on its own State Quota counselling to allocate seats in both government and private medical colleges. Eligibility Criteria:

    • Candidates must have qualified the NEET PG examination, which serves as the principal basis for seat allocation.
    • Candidates must possess a recognized MBBS degree from an institution approved by NMC.
    • Completion of the compulsory one-year internship (rotating internship) is required before taking admission.
  • Counseling Authorities:
    • For All India Quota (AIQ) seats, counselling is conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) at the national level.
    • The West Bengal Medical Counseling Committee (WBMCC) carries out the State Quota counselling for MD/MS programs.

Reservation policy

West Bengal follows quite a structured and transparent reservation policy for PG medical admissions, including MD/MS programs, in accordance with government regulations. The policy applies primarily to State Quota seats in government medical colleges, while All India Quota (AIQ) and majority of private colleges follow central or institutional rules. Understanding these provisions is vital for candidates seeking admission under reserved categories.

  • Categories Covered under Reservation:
    • Other Backward Classes (OBC-A and OBC-B): Combined reservation generally accounts for 27% of State Quota seats.
    • Scheduled Castes (SC): Typically, 22% of State Quota seats are reserved for SC candidates.
    • Scheduled Tribes (ST): Usually 6% of seats are reserved for ST candidates.
    • Persons with Disabilities (PwD): Around 5% of seats are reserved for candidates with disabilities, depending on the nature and severity of disability.
    • In-service Candidates: Certain government service doctors or teachers may get reserved seats on the basis of service tenure in West Bengal’s healthcare or educational institutions.
    • Domicile-based reservations: Domicile-based reservations for MD/MS admissions in West Bengal have ceased to be constitutionally valid for new admissions. All candidates, regardless of their state of residence, have to be admitted based on NEET PG merit.

Senior residency

Senior residency is a crucial phase after completing an MD/MS, letting doctors to assume responsibility in patient care, gain advanced clinical experience, and prepare for teaching or super-specialization. West Bengal offers very well-structured senior residency programs.

  • Government medical colleges in West Bengal, like Medical College Kolkata, IPGMER Kolkata, and R.G. Kar Medical College, offer senior residency posts to their own MD/MS graduates.
  • Postgraduate doctors have to work as senior resident mandatorily for 3 years under bond.
  • Senior residents who are degree holders get handsome 85000 per month salary.
