The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken decisive regulatory action after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a senior medical assessor for allegedly accepting a ₹10 lakh bribe in exchange for issuing a favorable inspection report for a private medical college in Karnataka.
According to the press release issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC, the implicated assessor has been immediately blacklisted pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings. The NMC has also announced that the concerned medical institution will not be granted renewal of its existing undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats for the Academic Year 2025–26.
In addition, all applications for new courses and seat increases submitted by the said college for the upcoming academic session have been cancelled and will not be processed.
Background of the Bribery Case
The CBI investigation began in May 2025, when the assessor was apprehended shortly after receiving the bribe. The agency filed an FIR against the assessor, college officials, and other unidentified individuals. The NMC emphasized that while assessors conduct inspections on behalf of the Commission, they are not NMC employees, but faculty members from government medical colleges selected through a randomized process.
Reinforcing its commitment to transparency and ethical governance, the NMC stated that such violations would be met with strict penalties under the NMC Act. Possible actions include:
- Imposing monetary penalties
- Withholding approval for new schemes or courses
- Reducing or suspending seat intake
- Recommending disciplinary action under Government Servants Conduct Rules
- Reporting to the Ethics and Medical Registration Board
This case marks a significant step in the Commission’s ongoing effort to preserve the integrity of medical education in India and enforce accountability across all levels of institutional conduct.
Advisory to Medical Colleges
The NMC has strongly urged all medical institutions and stakeholders to strictly comply with regulatory guidelines, ensure transparency during assessments, and uphold professional ethics to maintain public trust in the medical education system.
This incident serves as a stern reminder of the NMC’s commitment to ensuring quality medical education and rooting out corruption from the inspection and accreditation processes. Stakeholders are advised to align with the Commission’s framework to avoid punitive actions.
