The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, renowned for its world-class infrastructure and well-structured academic environment, is set to launch a pioneering BTech in Design programme in the 2025–26 academic year. Offered by the newly established Department of Design, this four-year undergraduate course is purpose-built to merge engineering fundamentals with creative design thinking, preparing students to tackle socio-technical challenges through innovation and empathetic problem-solving

Dual Entrance Criteria: JEE Advanced and UCEED

Admission to the BTech in Design requires aspirants to clear both JEE (Advanced) and the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). This dual-entry requirement ensures that selected students are well-equipped in both engineering fundamentals and creative design aptitude.

Eligibility Requirements for Aspiring Designers

Eligible candidates must have completed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2024 or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and for UCEED, applicants should be born on or after October 1, 2000, with a five-year age relaxation for SC/ST/PwD students. These eligibility norms follow existing national standards.

Online Application Process and Important Deadlines

Prospective students must apply through the official IIT Delhi admissions portal, ensuring they have valid scores in both entrance exams before registering. Key dates for application submission, counselling, and seat allocation will be made available on the institute’s website, and applicants are strongly advised to monitor announcements regularly.

Program Structure: Credits, Seats, and Curriculum Highlights

The BTech in Design spans four years, totaling 155 credits, and will initially admit 20 students. The curriculum is transdisciplinary, with approximately half of the courses focused on core design—covering design frameworks, prototyping, exhibition design, and entrepreneurship—and the remaining credits drawn from interdisciplinary domains such as mechanics, environmental science, communication, research methods, and teamwork-oriented modules.

Aligned with IIT Delhi’s Broader Curriculum Transformation

This program launch coincides with a comprehensive academic reform at IIT Delhi—the first in 12 years—effective from the 2025–26 academic session. The changes include significant curriculum flexibility, reduced credit loads and smaller class sizes, a greater emphasis on hands-on experiential learning, integration of AI and sustainability, and the introduction of honours and integrated BTech–MTech options.

Empowering Future-Ready, Interdisciplinary Thinkers

The BTech in Design embodies IIT Delhi’s vision to build future-ready professionals who can navigate both technical and ethical dimensions of innovation. Leveraging the institute’s high-tech labs, design studios, prototyping facilities, and an environment that promotes teamwork and creativity, students will be trained to apply systematic design thinking to real-world problems.

The BTech in Design at IIT Delhi, supported by its world-class facilities and rigorous admission through JEE and UCEED, marks a significant milestone in engineering education. With a carefully curated 155-credit curriculum, a limited intake of 20 students, and alignment with broader outcome-based academic reforms, this program sets a high bar for design-technology integration, placing IIT Delhi at the forefront of educational innovation.
