A Brief Cultural Overview of Uzbekistan

A Glimpse into History

Uzbekistan has a long and fascinating history. It was once a key part of the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that connected the East and West. Cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva were major centers for trade, science, and culture. These cities are still known for their beautiful Islamic architecture, historic mosques, and madrasas.

Famous historical figures such as Amir Timur (Tamerlane) and Ulugh Beg were born in this region. Uzbekistan was later part of the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union until it gained independence in 1991.

Climate and Weather

Uzbekistan has a continental climate, which means it has hot summers and cold winters. Summers can be very dry, with temperatures reaching over 40°C (104°F), while winters can drop below -10 °C (14°F), especially in northern areas. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant, making them the best seasons to visit.

Language and Religion

The official language is Uzbek, which is a Turkic language. Russian is also widely spoken, especially in cities and for business or education. In some areas, people speak Tajik, especially in Samarkand and Bukhara. English is becoming more common among the younger generation and in tourism.

Most people in Uzbekistan are Muslim, mainly Sunni Islam, but the country is secular, meaning religion and government are separate. People from other religions, such as Orthodox Christians and Jews, also live peacefully in the country.

Cuisine

Uzbek food is flavorful and hearty, often made with meat, rice, and vegetables. One of the most famous dishes is plov (pilaf), made with rice, carrots, onions, and lamb. Other popular dishes include:

• Lagman – hand-pulled noodles with meat and vegetables in broth

• Manti – steamed dumplings
• Nan-traditional round bread baked in clay ovens

Green tea is the most popular drink, and meals are often shared with family or guests, showing the importance of hospitality in Uzbek culture.

Traditions and Culture

Uzbek culture is a mix of Turkic, Persian, Arab, Russian, and Mongol influences. Family is very important in daily life, and people show great respect to their elders. Traditional clothing includes colorful patterns, such as the ikat style used in dresses and scarves. Music and dance are also a big part of celebrations. Traditional instruments like the dutar and doira are often played, especially during weddings or national holidays. Handicrafts such as ceramics, embroidery, and carpets are well-known and are often handmade using age-old techniques.

About the Tashkent Medical Academy

Tashkent Medical Academy (TMA) was established on July 19, 2005, by Presidential Decree No. 3629 issued by the first President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov. It was created through the merger of the 1st and 2nd Tashkent State Medical Institutes to strengthen medical education and healthcare services in Uzbekistan. As a leading medical institution in the country, TMA is committed to training highly qualified medical professionals, improving healthcare quality, and guiding the development of the national healthcare system. The academy also coordinates and provides methodological support to other medical universities and colleges in Uzbekistan, playing a central role in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, medical research, and public health initiatives. One of its main goals is to promote preventive medicine and prepare doctors to address environmental and ecological challenges affecting human health. Additionally, the academy is actively involved in encouraging healthy lifestyle practices across the population.

In recognition of its contributions, TMA was officially granted the status of a "Higher Education Institution" on March 31, 2008, by the State Testing Center under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan (Certificate No. 8). The academy has a strong academic team, consisting of 803 faculty members, including 2 academicians, 97 professors, 183 associate professors (docents), and 357 assistant lecturers. Among them, 176 hold Doctor of Science degrees and 396 are Ph.D. holders. The overall scientific potential of the faculty stands at 70.2%, demonstrating the institution’s strong focus on academic excellence and research.

TMA offers a wide range of educational programs through its faculties of General Medicine, Medical Pedagogy, Preventive Medicine, and Higher Nursing. Currently, 4,662 undergraduate students are enrolled, along with 735 postgraduate students across 46 specialties and 205 resident doctors in 20 specialties. To ensure practical training, the academy has established 58 academic departments and several modern facilities, including a Center for Practical Skills Development, an OSCE (Objectively Structured Clinical Examination) Center, two training laboratories, a School of Public Health, an Information-Resource Center, a Demonstration-Training Dentistry Complex, and two simulation modules modeled as Rural Doctor’s Stations. Clinical education is provided at TMA’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd clinics, as well as in leading Republican Specialized Scientific-Practical Medical Centers and City Clinical Hospitals.

Scientific research is one of the key priorities at TMA. Since 2005, the academy has produced 64 Doctors of Science and 388 Ph.D. graduates. The Central Research Laboratory (CRL) serves as the main hub for research activities, where 25 projects are currently underway. These include 18 applied projects, 3 fundamental research projects, 2 innovation-based studies, and 2 projects focused on young researchers. A total of 160 staff members are involved in these projects, which are supported by grants. The academy also established a Coordination Council for overseeing and monitoring research related to ecology and human health. Furthermore, there are seven specialized scientific councils functioning at the academy to support academic research, scientific publications, and advancements in the medical field.

FEE STRUCTURE 2024-25

• Mess and hostel charges are chargeable on an Academic Year basis.
• Students Visa charges from India and air ticket charges will be payable by students.

Eligibility Criteria

• Students should be in between the Minimum & maximum. ages of 17 and 25 years. (on or before 31st December of admission year)
  
• The student must have passed class 12th with PCB and English subject from a board recognized by the government of India.
• Students should have secured a minimum of 50% in PCB in 10+2.
• Students should have qualified the NEET Exam as there are no admissions possible in the Samarkand State Medical University without qualifying the NEET Exam for Indian Students.
