In the aftermath of the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which struck the hostel building of BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad (BJMC), the institution has taken the difficult step of canceling all ongoing and upcoming MBBS internal exams until further notice.

The crash, involving a Boeing Dreamliner, resulted in the collapse of the medical students’ hostel building, directly affecting the lives of more than 500 students—especially those in the first and second years. The accident has had a devastating impact, with four MBBS students confirmed dead and one seriously injured.

In response, BJMC authorities announced the cancellation of internal MBBS exams and suspended summer vacations for faculty and doctors, asking them to remain available to handle the emergency situation.

Over 200 medical students, including MBBS residents, have vacated the college hostels, with many returning home out of fear and trauma. Sources confirm that at least 40 students were hospitalized following the incident, suffering from shock and emotional distress.

A senior BJMC official noted that the mental health of students and the collapse of campus infrastructure made it impossible to conduct exams or academic sessions at this time. “The psychological impact is enormous,” the official said.

The crash destroyed the main students' hostel and dining area, leaving residents without access to food, water, or essential services. Many have been forced to seek temporary accommodation.

Medical Duty Continues Despite Crisis

While academic activities have been suspended, BJMC doctors and interns continue to serve at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, where many crash victims are being treated. The second phase of the summer exam, originally scheduled for June 13, has also been indefinitely postponed.

In light of the urgent medical needs, BJMC faculty and staff have been instructed to remain on duty and assist in treating the injured. Authorities have stated that any decision on the resumption of academic activities will only be made after ensuring the safety and mental well-being of all students.
