In a major development, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) will now conduct the NEET PG 2025 examination on August 3, 2025, in a single shift, following a Supreme Court directive and subsequent approval of NBEMS’s request for more time.

Originally scheduled for June 15, 2025, in two shifts, the exam format drew sharp criticism from students and was legally challenged for being non-uniform and potentially unfair. The Supreme Court, in a hearing on May 30, had directed that the exam be held in a single session nationwide to ensure fairness and standardization. The Court refused to accept NBEMS’s argument that it lacked enough exam centers to accommodate all candidates in one shift, citing India’s technological capabilities.

In compliance, NBEMS filed an application seeking an extension of the deadline, proposing August 3 as the revised date. On June 6, 2025, a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and A G Masih granted NBEMS the requested extension but expressed concern over the delay. The Court questioned why NBEMS had not initiated preparations earlier despite the May 30 directive.NBEMS justified the August date by presenting a communication from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which cited August 3 as the earliest feasible date to conduct the test in one shift due to large-scale logistical requirements.

New Proposed NEET PG 2025 Exam Date

The NBEMS has proposed a new date of August 3, 2025, for the NEET PG 2025 exam. The revised timing for the examination is expected to be from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, but this will be officially confirmed once approved by the Supreme Court.

Logistical Challenges for Single Shift

To implement the Supreme Court’s directive, the NBEMS is preparing to conduct NEET PG 2025 in a single shift across 1,000+ exam centers in over 250 cities. This massive undertaking will involve:

  • Deploying nearly 60,000 personnel, including invigilators, technical teams, and security staff.
  • Partnering with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for digital and technical infrastructure.
  • Ensuring real-time coordination and standard operating procedures across all locations.

Impact on Candidates

While the rescheduling might disrupt some students' preparation timelines, the decision is being welcomed for ensuring a level playing field. Students are advised to continue their preparation as per the new tentative schedule and keep monitoring the official websites — natboard.edu.in and nbe.edu.in — for updated notifications.

Previous Fee Hike and Exam Pattern Changes

This decision also comes after previous controversies regarding fee hikes and logistical inconsistencies in NEET PG exams. The move to standardize the examination pattern is being seen as a step toward more transparent and student-friendly policies.

The postponement of NEET PG 2025 is a critical decision aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency, and equality for all medical aspirants in India. With the Supreme Court mandating a single-shift format, students can expect a more balanced and standardized exam experience. While logistical challenges remain, NBEMS is actively working to implement this directive and is expected to confirm the final date soon.
