In a progressive move to ease financial constraints on aspiring doctors, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an official directive to 50 top medical institutions across India to promote the PM Vidyalaxmi Education Loan Scheme in their official prospectuses and admission brochures. This step is aimed at enhancing awareness about accessible education loan options for medical students.
The PM Vidyalaxmi Education Loan Scheme, launched on November 6, 2024, is based on the Model Education Loan Scheme (MELS) developed by the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). The scheme facilitates collateral-free and guarantor-free education loans, specifically designed to support meritorious students seeking admission in Quality Higher Educational Institutions (QHEIs).
According to the NMC notice, all NMC medical colleges listed under this scheme are required to incorporate complete information about the Vidyalaxmi education loan scheme for medical students. This ensures that students and their families are fully informed about the financial assistance options available through banks.
The PM Vidyalaxmi portal provides a transparent, fully digital, and student-friendly platform for applying to loans under this scheme. All Scheduled Commercial Banks have been advised by the RBI to adopt this model to improve accessibility to education loans for medical education.
